Classic Sugar Cookies - Perfect Every Time

There's nothing quite like the smell of fresh-baked sugar cookies filling your kitchen! These classic sugar cookies are buttery, tender, and perfect for any occasion. Whether you're decorating them for the holidays or enjoying them plain with a cup of tea, this foolproof recipe delivers bakery-quality results every time.

Ingredients:

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3-4 tablespoons decorating sugar (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy (about 3-4 minutes).

  4. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.

  5. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients until just combined. Don't overmix!

  6. Roll dough into 1-inch balls and place them 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.

  7. Flatten each ball slightly with the bottom of a glass dipped in sugar.

  8. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden. Centers will look slightly underdone - that's perfect!

  9. Cool on baking sheet for 2 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Baker's Tips:

  • For extra flavor, add 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • Chill dough for 30 minutes if it's too soft to handle
  • These cookies freeze beautifully for up to 3 months

Makes about 3 dozen cookies. Enjoy!🍪
